Frequently Asked Questions

For additional information see our Lesson Policy page —

Q: Is there anything my student or I should bring to the first lesson?

A: Yes! Please bring your instrument with you (unless you’re taking piano lessons). You’re also welcome to print and bring our New Student Form to save time.

Q: How do you go about picking a teacher for the student?

A: We have several talented teachers available throughout the week, each with different schedules. All of our instructors are experienced with beginners and are well-rounded in music theory, technique, and a variety of musical genres.

Some teachers are available only a few days a week, while others teach full-time. If you see a teacher on our website who feels like a great fit, feel free to ask about their availability when you contact us. If you're unsure, don’t worry—we’ll match you with a great teacher and a time that works best for your schedule.

Q: I’m an adult and have never played an instrument before. Do you offer beginner lessons for adults?

A: Absolutely! We love working with adult beginners. It’s never too late to start learning an instrument.

The most important advice we give our adult students is to attend your lesson each week. Even if life gets busy with work, family, or other commitments and you don’t get much practice time in, showing up consistently is key to making progress.

We’re here to support you every step of the way and help you succeed!

Q: What am I committed to if I sign up for lessons?

A: We offer a simple month-to-month commitment. Once you sign up for a lesson time, that time slot is reserved for you each month until you let us know otherwise.

If you decide to discontinue lessons, we require a completed cancellation form to be submitted prior to the 1st of the month.

Q: Are you an approved Direct Pay Vendor trough EFA?

A: Yes! Arkansas Music Conservatory is an approved Direct Pay Vendor for lessons through ClassWallet as part of the EFA program.

We do ask that EFA students keep a second form of payment on file to cover any invoices not paid by the 25th of the month, as well as any books and/or supplies.

Please note that Arkansas Music Works is not an approved vendor. Any books or supplies purchased through them will need to be submitted for personal reimbursement.

Q: Can I take a one-time lesson just to see if I enjoy it?

A: Yes! We’re happy to set up a one-time lesson with one of our instructors. The cost is $32.50, and if you decide to continue, that payment will be applied toward your monthly tuition for that month.

If you choose to take a trial lesson, our lesson coordinator will work with you to find a schedule that fits your availability if you choose to continue lessons.

Q: Do you allow bi-weekly lessons?

A: We only offer weekly lessons. Bi-weekly scheduling is challenging for our teachers and can slow your progress. The best way to learn and improve is to attend lessons every week consistently.

Q: Do you allow students to “pay as you go” or pay per lesson?

A: No. We operate on a month-to-month billing basis. When a student accepts a lesson time, they are committing to a recurring weekly lesson schedule. Please note that, according to our policy, missed lessons are non-refundable.

Q: What if I need to change my lesson time for a certain week?

A: We cannot guarantee schedule changes, as our teachers usually have full calendars. If you know you’ll miss a lesson, please notify your teacher as soon as possible—at least 24 hours before your scheduled time.

If the teacher has availability, they may offer a makeup lesson as a courtesy, but this is not guaranteed.

Q: What if I don't want to set up an “autopay” for lessons?

A: To ensure our teachers are paid reliably, we require all students to have a form of payment on file.

As of January 1, 2026, we no longer accept cash or checks. All students must provide a payment method that can be processed automatically each month. We accept credit and debit cards, as well as ACH (automatic withdrawal from your checking account) using a voided check.

Q: My student wants to take a break from lessons. Can we still keep our spot?

A: We understand that life happens and you may need to pause lessons. To be fair to our instructors and ensure they receive partial payment, we can hold your spot only if a holding fee is paid, equal to half of the monthly tuition.

Because many of our instruments have waiting lists, we can usually hold a spot for one month at a time.

Q: A half-hour per week doesn’t seem like enough time for me. Can I take an hour lesson or multiple lessons per week?

A: We’ve found that 30-minute lessons work best for most students, especially beginners. We recommend starting with a 30-minute lesson and adding more time later if needed. Typically, it’s our more advanced students who take longer or additional lessons each week.

Some of our band instrument instructors feel that 45-minute lessons can be more effective for certain instruments, as it allows extra time for warm-ups and ensures students get the most out of their lesson.

Q: How do I properly inform my teacher that I will not be at my lesson?

A: At your first lesson, you should ask your teacher for their preferred method of communication. If they’ve shared their contact information, you are welcome to call or text them directly. Please use your teacher’s preferred method of communication as a first line of communication for missed lessons—whether that’s phone, email, or an app.

If you cannot reach them you are more than welcome to notify us by:

  • Calling 479-268-3307

  • Texting 479-534-4288

  • Emailing juliec@arkansasmusicworks.com

Leaving a voicemail is considered acceptable notice if no one answers.

Q: How much notice do I need to give to discontinue my lessons?

A: All cancellations must be submitted before the 1st of the month. If you plan to stop lessons in the middle of a month, you must notify us prior to the 1st; otherwise, you will be charged the full tuition and will not be refund or prorate for that month’s tuition.

To ensure your billing is stopped, you must notify our lesson coordinator in writing by filling out the Discontinuation Form.

Q: How do you handle holidays where you are closed?

A: Planned Closures: We do not provide credits for holidays. Students receive an average of 4 lessons per month, and months with a 5th week balance out holiday closures over the year. To see our pre-planned holiday closures for 2026, please visit our contact page.

A: Weather Closures: AMC management will determine if in person lessons cannot be held due to inclement weather. At that time lessons will switch to virtual instruction, and teachers will reach out to their students with individual lesson plans.

If a teacher chooses not to offer a virtual lesson, a credit for the missed lesson will be applied to the following month’s tuition. Please note, if a student declines a virtual lesson offered by a teacher, they will not receive a credit for the missed lesson.

Q: What is your policy on make-ups?

A: We cannot guarantee that a teacher will have time to offer a make-up lesson. If you know you’ll miss a lesson, please give at least 24 hours’ notice.

If the teacher is able to open a spot that week, they may offer it as a courtesy, but this is not guaranteed. Please note, make-ups are not allowed for no-shows or cancellations made less than 24 hours before the lesson.
